Me vs. You marketing

When it comes to marketing our businesses it is very important that we focus on the needs of our potential clients. It is our job to provide photographic services to fill their needs, whether it’s a need for an image to sell soft drinks or a family’s need for a Christmas portrait we are here to provide. When it comes to your marketing and business identity it’s not about selling how awesome and cool you are it’s about letting the client know you understand their needs and how you can fulfill them. I see photographers all the time using “me” marketing. They talk about all the cool stuff they have done or all the equipment they have but in the end that’s not what will sell the client. They need you to let them know how you are the best option for providing the photographic services that they need.

When it comes to your website, your print promo material etc. make sure you write things in a way that tells the client how you will be able to fulfill their needs. It’s not supposed to be a superhero bio about you.

Oh yeah and stop listing off every single piece of equipment you own. The only person that cares is you and it certainly doesn’t give you any credibility. In the end every job is different and may require different equipment to get the job done right. You don’t want to relate your creative abilities to an equipment list.

haha so true about letting the client know what you can do for them. i think it's knowing the difference of a business-owner mentality and an employee mentality that helps a photographer succeed. great tip!
